Updated: Jun 2, 2022

The style of the kitchen is for me probably one of the most important elements when it comes to choosing a kitchen. Looking to your surroundings may give you the inspiration you need to choose a style. Bare in mind the style of the overall appartment or house. Consider using that style throughout the house, this will help have a more cohesive flow throughout the house. There are many popular styles to choose from. The one that you pick may depend on the space available, the type of home you own, the age of the house and your own personal style. Here is a list of some kitchen styles to help you make that decision.

CLASSIC

Classic kitchens are timeless. They tend to consist of neutral colour palettes with simple details. They are unfussy and fresh and stand the test of time. These kitchens mix stained or painted cabinetry. Black, brown, cream and white feature heavily in this design. Simple cabinet door style is a key feature. A simple shaker door or a shaker door with a bead moulding helps to bring the look together. Using white marble countertops will create a focal point in your kitchen. Classic style kitchen awards you the flexibility of mixing other styles through lighting or dining furniture.

CONTEMPORARY

This style of kitchen reflects old and new elements to create a polished and sleek aesthetic. The contemporary style kitchen is a really popular design concept that has been readily adopted by the masses. Contemporary kitchens are usually free of any excess detailing. The focus tends to be on the relationship of materials, surfaces, appliances and colours.

Contemporary kitchen design is defined by sleek acrylic cabinets and surfaces with minimalist decorating, a clean finish, strong and bold colours, chrome or steel finished.

CRAFTSMAN

Craftsman style kitchens place emphasis on natural material, rich woods, handcrafted tiles, old-fashioned taps and sinks, built in units with classic simplicity. Typical accents almost always include solidly built and expertly crafted cabinetry and countertops. Often intricate woodwork or stonework are incorporated throughout the kitchen to give an overall artisan feel to the environment. Craftsman style kitchens are rustic and inviting in a warm and down-to-earth kind of a way.

ECLECTIC

The eclectic style is taken from a broad and diverse range of source. So basically, anything goes. This style allows you to mix and match you own kitchen style in a way that suits you. Bold paint choices, intricate odds and ends, a personally curated collection of trinket, and various textural elements are all part of of eclecticism. If done correctly, the eclectic designed kitchen with perfectly mismatched accoutrements and adornments that are tied together by a centrally placed pop of colour can provide a sense of consistency, and a cool and easy atmosphere.

FARMHOUSE

Farmhouse kitchens are warm and inviting, offering functionality and comforting traditional style, whilst still retaining a sturdy visual appeal. Features will include open shelving, wide sinks, wood flooring, woven baskets and a dresser adorned with a china set or hand painted dishes. The big kitchen table is another traditional feature of this design, with farm-style seating or benches and sturdily built wooden countertops that offer functionality as well as beauty. Country colours range from red, yellow, blue, mixed with aged tones of cream and pale yellow. There is an undeniable emphasis on natural woods with cooper pipes or pots on display.

FRENCH COUNTRY

French country kitchens will have a balance between earthy, traditional and chic. The colours are warm, fabrics will feature rich tones of russet, cobalt and ochre, cabinets can be warm toned wood or sleek white. Mustard yellow and warm reds are characteristic, as are farm animals mixed in the the decor. Rough hewn textures, copper pots, and rush seats add the final touches.

INDUSTRIAL This style is characterised by exposed brick, which tends to form the backdrop for this design. Industrial kitchen feature raw textural materials, including metal, concrete, steel, and wood. This style emerged from affordability and practicality and is generally found in appartments, lofts and condos due to expanse of open space which is synonymous with this style. Modern appliances work well in this design also. Oversized pieces such as light fittings, worn looking or clunky furnishings allow your to create a stylish look.

MODERN

Similar to a contemporary kitchen style, a modern style kitchen embodies sleek sophistication. This style is clutter and adornment free with emphasis on high-quality materials and artistry. Frame-less cabinetry, sleek and simple hardware, strong horizontal lines and reflective surfaces and countertops are a key components of this design and are the Pièce De Resistance of the over all look of luxury. Classic and modern furnishings consistent with high quality and simply constructed, with clean lines and timeless silhouettes, help create this upscale feel.

RUSTIC

“Worn”, “distressed” and “rough hewn” are most certainly not the words that spring to mind when you think of a new kitchen. Thanks to reclaimed wood, cabinets, flooring, stone, brick vintage style appliances and fireplaces, the rustic kitchen is easily achieved. Unfinished surfaces, with a use of natural fibres or even tapestries feature in abundance in this style. Similar in concept to craftsman and farmhouse, rustic style is reminiscent to that of a log cabin and evokes themes of simplicity, practicality and nature.

SCANDINAVIAN

When it comes to kitchens, creating a Scandinavian - inspired space typically involves layer on accents of warm wood in forms of simple cabinetry and flooring. Paint colours in pale hues, and minimalist yet textured backsplash. Straight lines feature heavily in the style. Spaces needs to be light and bright, with big windows a must to marry the space with nature. Countertops are uncluttered, with appliances often hidden in the cabinetry.

TRADITIONAL

Traditional kitchens are defined by their details. This may include decorative moldings, corbels, cornis, pillars, raised- panel cabinets and in-frame cabinetry. Antique finishes are commonplace in a traditional kitchen with even the odd chandelier making an appearance. Symmetry and elegance real key elements to this design. Understated sophistication with no outlandish features, “every element should complement the next”. Glass front cabinets to showcase glass wear or family heirlooms, customised island and layer architectural details such as arches, beam ceilings or box beam ceilings round this style off nicely.
